Data File Recovery Basics

Data File Recovery Here we offer an overview of data file recovery process and techniques. If you have lost data and need to retrieve the lost files, go to data file recovery section right now. Data loss results from a large number of failures, we’ll subdivide them into 4 major groups.

  • data or file deletion
  • OS system failure
  • partition or file system failure
  • hard drive failire

Data or File Deletion

In case of accidental deletion the system and the hard drive fuction properly, at least you can boot up and access other files on the disk. You shift-delete or remove the files from the recycle bin by mistake, or the deletion may be a result of a virus attack or software failure. The files are removed from the system, you cannot see them when browsing folders, and the disk space they occupied is now available for new data. But physically they remain on the disk until being overwritten by other files. Here, data file recovery process is equivalent to uvdeleting files, or, in other words, making them visible for the system again. The undelete feature is not included in most operating systems, for example, Windows. Data file recovery is performed with the help of recovery / undelete software.

OS system failure

It’s a very common case when end users look for data file recovery options, though the term “recovery” is rather far-fetched. The files remain absolutely intact and the hard drive is not damaged, but you cannot access them using your current operating system. A quick and handy solution is a CD with a bootable operating system (the one that does not require installation on your hard drive). Such OS not just enables you to copy and back up files, it often includes addtitional utilities for removing viruses of even repairing the system.

Partition or file system failure

Again, the files and the hard drive remain intact, but the failure occurs on a deeper level than the operating system. However, data file recovery software is available for such cases. But recovery procedure requires a bit deeper knowledge of computer data structuring. For example, in case of partition loss it is important to define the boundaries between the partitions (volumes). Advanced users can manage the problem on their own.

Hard drive failure

If your hard drive crashed you should not make any data file recovery attempts yourself. The recovery procedure requires specialized software, equipment and facilities available at data recovery companies. For example, the hard drive cover should be removed only in cleanrooms, otherwise the airborne dust settled on the platters and caught between the platters and the head may damage the platters and provoke complete destruction of your data. The applied data file recovery techniques depend of the damage type. Sometimes the drive requires replacement of a single part, for example, the head or the bearing. If the platters were damaged the remaining information is retrieved from the disk surface with the help of disk-imaging procedure. The retrieved disk image is saved to another storage device and analyzed, as much as possible of the damaged information is reconstructed.

Data File Recovery Tip:

If you cannot access you files and not certain about the failure type, don’t attempt to recover data on your own.
